The CBCG Governor, Ms Irena Radović, was a speaker at the 30th jubilee Euromoney Central & Eastern European Forum held in Vienna. This year, this prestigious forum gathered more than 2,000 financial market leaders, government representatives, investors and international institutions, providing a platform for exchanging ideas and discussing the region’s key economic and financial issues.
Governor Radović spoke on a panel titled Central banks after the storm, which addressed the central banks’ challenges and opportunities in the contemporary economic environment. Discussion topics included presenting their challenges and possibilities in the context of a complex geopolitical framework and uncertainty, evaluating the effectiveness of monetary policy in overcoming inflation, introducing central bank digital currencies and preserving the supreme monetary institutions’ independence.
During her presentation, Governor Radović referred to Montenegro’s recent accession to SEPA and the economic progress and perspectives in the conditions of the accelerated EU accession. She also emphasised the increasing pressure on central banks to expand their mandates due to the need to provide adequate responses to complex economic and social challenges.
“Although central banks must adapt to changing circumstances, they must equally maintain a clear focus on their core responsibilities,” the governor said, adding that it will be crucial for central banks to balance their expanded roles with the need to preserve their independence in the future. Furthermore, she emphasised that central banks’ independence is key to safeguarding public trust, the financial system’s stability and macroeconomic stability, and integration into the EU and the Eurosystem.
The panellists also discussed economic resilience, ESG initiatives, financial sector digitalisation, challenges of sustainable financing and the future of European economies in EU integration.
This year, the Euromoney CEE Forum also enabled key players to analyse challenges and opportunities in the region, contributing to creating policies that promote stability and development.
